Will Drawing Manga Improve Literacy?

Posted by admin on August 11, 2008

While for many, drawing Manga may just be a favourite hobby it seems that Manga artists are becoming even more in demand. I was reading Daily Yomiuri Online the other day and in an article they were discussing the benefits of Manga to help improve the literacy levels of today’s youth.

With the growing concern over flagging book sales, particularly within the younger age groups, publishers are now actively seeking manga artists to illustrate the covers of novels. These in turn are then being sold at convenience stores.

“We thought that maybe we could get people to read well-known works perceived as tough reads by turning them into manga and selling them at convenience stores,” East Press’ Kosuke Maruo said.

Perhaps now manga will grace the covers of many popular and main-stream novels. You can read more about this here
